As part of our countdown to leaving Austria this fall, we made a farewell hiking trip to the Austrian alps with friends. We visited the Salzkammergut region, which is one of our favorite areas of the Alps. The actual mountain range we visited is known as the Dachstein, and we stayed at Krippenstein Lodge, about 3 hours from Vienna and easily accessible from the valley (Obertraun) via cable car.
We hiked a hell of a lot, and replenished our energy with rich food and beer. In all I hiked about twelve hours during the weekend. The temperatures were cool, typically around 50 degrees, which was great relief from the recent 90+ temps in Vienna.
As with most trips to the Alps, you get a little bit of everything: sun, rain, wind, fog. We had more fog than anything else, which made for some nice photo opportunities. During the trip I was testing out a new camera I bought as a replacement for my Sony Alpha which was taken during the burglary in June. My new camera is a Canon EOS XS; a remarkable piece of equipment for the $450 price tag. I'm going to add a few extra lenses, but based on what I've seen so far, I don't think I'll ever be going back to Sony.
Take a look at a few of my favorite pictures from our trip. (The snail was actually taken by the Attache.)
